Predominant Holder of MCS Spectrum in the 2500 MHz Range
Inukshuk Internet Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Microcell
Telecommunications Inc., a Canadian wireless telecommunications
company best known for its Fidoƒn brand name. With its licenses
for multipoint communication systems (MCS) spectrum from 2500 to
2596 MHz, Inukshuk will build a unique "last-mile" broadband
wireless access (BWA) network to provide Internet and data
access to residential, small office/ home office (SOHO) and
small and medium enterprise (SME) customers across Canada.
A Unique Partnership Opportunity
Inukshuk represents the only opportunity in Canada for a partner
to leverage and deploy a true BWA network across the country or
regionally. The technology Inukshuk is planning on using
provides significant competitive advantages over the current
digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable technologies, providing
a compelling and distinctive service offering. Some of the key
features of Inukshuk's network are summarised as: Unique high-speed network that can serve virtually all areas of
Canada, both urban and rural.
Inukshuk holds MCS licenses to build out a BWA network across
Canada, in all provinces and territories except Manitoba and
Saskatchewan. Inukshuk's serving territory encompasses the
largest and most densely populated areas of the country,
including Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, as well as the most
rural and remote in Canada, where current infrastructure often
does not support high-speed services. Inukshuk's planned
technology is well suited to meet the needs of this broad range
of operating environments. It is cost effective in both large
cities and small towns or villages. It is thus possible for
Inukshuk to prioritise network deployment to areas viewed as
strategic by its partners, enabling them to capture a
significant share of the high-speed market while minimising
financial risks.
Easy to install technology enables ease of subscription and
service.
The current high-speed infrastructure, namely cable or DSL,
requires customers to have their network access configured
before they can receive their service. In many cases this
requires the effort of a technical team at one or more locations
within the network. Inukshuk does not require any physical
presence by the service provider's representatives and
consequently there are no activation delays. With its internal
omni-directional antenna, the Inukshuk customer premise
equipment (CPE) can be easily installed by the consumer in
minutes, who then self-registers for service via the Internet.
This unique differentiating feature enables a retail
distribution model very similar to digital cellular telephony,
one where impulse purchases by the end-user are enabled.
Additionally, this type of self-registration places the power of
service configuration fully in the hands of the subscriber,
while minimising the time to get "on-line".
State-of-the-art, non-line-of-site technology allows portability.
The non-line-of-site technology embraced by Inukshuk provides
true portability unlike cable or DSL. Customers can access the
Internet from their home, office, or anywhere else within
Inukshuk's coverage area, at anytime. Customers will be able to
roam the entire BWA network, connecting anywhere there is
network coverage to receive high-speed access by simply using a
portable CPE device roughly the size of a personal digital
assistant (PDA).
The cellular-like network architecture is both flexible and
highly scalable.
Being cellular in design, Inukshuk's architecture supports very
targeted deployments. As such, Inukshuk will progressively
deploy its network, prioritising specific areas where population
density, high-speed market potential, or partners' strategic
interest justify the rollout of the communications
infrastructure. This targeted approach to deployment enables
Inukshuk to address the needs of customers efficiently without
having to commit significant capital. To further expedite
deployment and make the most effective capital commitments,
Inukshuk looks forward to leveraging the facilities and
strengths brought to bear by its strategic partners, and
customising these partnerships for greatest efficiency and
effectiveness.
